Wow. You know that pit you get in your stomach when you finish a good book? I just got that after finishing [at least one branch of] Rubicon. Normally I wouldn't even comment, but it was just that good. The maps were gorgeously designed, the challenge was incredibly frustrating (and fun), the storyline was excellent... and the dream levels? Awe-inspiring. You guys took what appeared in Marathon: Infinity and ran with it, creating some of the most memorable things I've yet to see in any videogame. Running through the trenches with missles and grenades and bullets flying over my head, running through a space station to suddenly see a gap, running over a barren plain to see... bureau? The Ascension Factor! Surreal.

Of course, there were the tiny flaws that showed up in a project the size of Rubicon. There's a missing frame of the new pistol graphics when firing so that the old graphics pop up for a millisecond. Sounds that suddenly cut off on certain polygons. Misspelling "S'pht" (twice) in the final Salinger terminal. But you know? It doesn't matter with Rubicon. This is the most overall fulfilling Marathon experience I've had since Marathon 1, and possibly even better than that. I don't know how to compliment Rubicon enough, so I'll just say this:

The game has rekindled my interest in Marathon. It has returned to the game that urge to create familiar and alien landscapes, to challenge both mind and skill, and to explore the limits of interactive fiction. Thank you.

Klaus: you want jumping with damage? Bullets won't work. Try launching a grenade at your feet while running. Best to practice this after saving a game and using a cheater. But grenade hopping is not necessary to complete any Rubicon level.

For REAL MAN's jumping, use a missile instead of a grenade. Better have a 2X shield charge first, though.

I follow the hole map but I cant enter the room with additional weapons (The ist stuck, an i cant pass through the window beside. I can«t jump nor do I fin«d additional switches. I cant use new oxygene bottles, only making them explode is possible.
I als o tried to use the guns for jumping but it doesnt work. It is said when jumpimg by the help of guns one gets damage. Well I shoot down, I dont get any damage, and I dont jump? So where is the fault? Who knows? Thousand Thanks for exspected answers!!

I'm putting together what I hope will be a comprehensive list of Rubicon secrets, but will only have the time to do 1or 2 levels a day, if that, and would love to have some help. For each level, the list should be broken down by area of the map and by a brief, but deliberately vague description of where the secret can be found. I have completed Honk if You're an Underpaid Cyborg and would be happy to send it to anyone who is interested in helping. This will give you an idea of style and format. If you do wish to help, please let me know so that we can split up the levels and share info so that no secret is missed.

Rubicon is a very enjoyable Marathon scenario! After playing through both planks on TC, I have spent most of my time lately trying to vid as many of the levels as possible. Just wanted everyone to know that I have successfully vid 57 of the 61 solo levels. If anyone is interested in viewing them, I would be happy to email you the entire package. Just write to me. To date, the 4 levels I have not been able to vid (yet) are: Level 14 - "Sodding Logs", Level 43 - "The Ascension Factor", Level 64 - "Blasting Cherries", and Level 65 - "Drinking Vitriol". If anyone has vid any of these four levels, I would love to see your film.

Warning - there are some spoilers here - nothing telling you how to win, but some commentary for those who've already finished the game.

Wow! I've Blasted Cherries and I just finsihed Drinking Vitrol - Chris, what were you thinking when you designed that level? Talk about impossible! I can't believe that I found a way to survive, to kill everything but the juggernauts, including the Pfhor High Counsel! I followed almost the same path as Sidoh - I call it the Rubimax path - Chimera Line to Salinger Line, switching over to the Pfhor Line at The Gaiters of NY, but then switching back to the Salinger Line at the Ascension Factor (talk about a kick-ass level!) and taking it all The way to the end, Drinking Vitrol before an excursion in Hard Vacuum. This is essentially the longest path one can take in Rubicon, and it's has a nice ending. Of course, I also took the alternate branches at Hairy Legs (it wasn't easy to deliberately let the reactor explode) and The Ascension Factor so as to not leave anything out. I believe that I've found most if not all of the secrets in this game - secret terms, secret ammo stashes and definitely secret levels. I've survived The White Room, gone Pushing Cows, experienced Blasted Frogs and lived to tell the tale of Hell Pfhor You, picking up the largest ammo stash in the game.

I'm curious - the spoiler guide shows a branch point at Revenge of the Lysol Lady and the term text seems to indicate equal fates. Has anyone found an alternate exit here?

One final comment. It seems intersting to me that the only way to insure the safety of the admiral is to let the reactor in the Chimera blow up. Successfully shutting down the reactor in Hairy Legs puts you in the wrong place at the wrong time, virtually insuring the admiral's demise. It's still possible to save the admiral and get back to the Salinger Line to prevent the worst possible disaster to befall humankind, but it just goes against my grain to fail in a mission. I guess there's a lesson here - good outcomes can have negative consequences.

Great job, Rubicon team! I can't wait to see what some 3rd parties (or would it be 4th parties) can do in creating more levels. In the meanting, I need to get back to reality for a while ;-)

Help,
I've just started and am the end of "Honk" I'm outside the Communications center and have gotten the access card. I open the door by the vents (accross from the Chimera sign) and there are a bunch of boxes in my way. I think I've activated the switch in there, but now what? Where is the door for the Com Center.

As an aside, is there any way to jump? There are some boxes in another part that I think I need to jump onto, but don't know how to get up ther (it's a switch for an elevator I think)

Help and hints would be appreciated.
Thanks!
All in all, a fantastic game, my first Marathon game.

I'm loving Rubicon: thanks, everyone who worked to get this out! Now, I hate asking for help, but I've looked everywhere! Can someone give me a small hint without actually giving me an answer? In the first major level (Honk if you're an underpaid Cyborg), toward the end, right before dropping down the elevator shaft into the last area where the transporters are, there is an opening to the upper left (as you face the elevator shaft). I know I should be able to get up there, but I'm at a loss. Finishing the level is not a problem, but I'd like to explore all the areas.

Any gentle hints? Thanks, all!

Un-freakin'-believable.

It's easy to understand why this took years to create. This is outstanding work. Lots of little details that could have been glossed over or left to slip through the cracks were given their due. Lots of brainpower needed to figure this out, and I had to hit the spoiler guide a few times to make it through. Had to use the cheater to get through the final bloodbath, I'm just not that good. Oh, your secret level... you must be joking.

The best part is that I've got another plotline to explore. This whole scenario just kicks so much ass--the levels are huge, the weapons are sweet, you've built a few surprises into this game ("...right... NOW!"), the levels are fun to play (except for the hard vacuum levels, because I suck at Marathon), and your look and feel are kept consistent all the way through. This is really commercial-grade stuff.

Congratulations on a job well done. I hope everybody involved with the Rubicon project feels good about what you've accomplished, because it's a royal pain in the ass to build something this big and keep the quality high every step of the way. Certainly it was more work than I and most others would be willing to do. All props to you. Thanks so much for all your time and efforts.

Very Very Good game. I just completed the final level (Toadstools) of a 30 level path taken (Total Carnage the whole way!). I started at Rozinante and took the Salinger path to Blasted Vent Cores. Next, I transferred to Hex Lv 73 after The Gators Of NY. I stayed on the Pfhor plank for the rest of the game taking Blasting Cherries at the end. It seems like so long ago I was kicking butt on the Chimera. The levels are stunning and the plot is very well in depth. Can't wait for a sequel, maybe I'll try n help on one.

My first Mac shooter was Marathon after being addicted to the LAN and solo play, It lost it's affect on me. Much later, I bought Marathon 2 in a game pack and enjoyed the second game. But I did miss out on the fun of Infinity. Rubicon is what Bungie forgot. It seems better then any other Marathon game and has a better price tag too. :-)

All you need is to fix that one annoyance, somehow trying to get Net play in.

OPEN GL RUBICON ON iMACS: Great game, all that 68k Marathon 1 &2 nostalgia has come flooding back!! I would love to use the Open GL rendering, but using Open GL just makes the game crash or appear in white - I have read that white areas indicate that the VRAM in the video card has been filled. I am using a 400 Mhz iMacDV with 8Mb VRAM (Rage 128) and 320Mb of RAM. Has anyone got Rubicon working with Open GL on a similar system? I love that thing! playing through marathon again, really brings back memories. My first computer in 1995 was a Performa 6290, 100mhz, 8mb ram. The first game I ever bought was Marathon Infinty, It was worth every cent and more, and playing this again is great you guys really do the marathon series justice, and I maintain my clami the maratahon IS THE BEST GAME EVER MADE, PERIOD. Rubicon is a totall work of genuis. I'm having serious trouble installing the game. I'm having the same problems as others, with the bad resource fork when unstuffing it. I tried to solve it by downloading all the files seperately, w/ the mix&match, and that didn't really work. When I launched the application, it said that the Rubicon Map, Shapes, Sounds, and Images files were not in the folder when they were. I'm thinking that it might be related to the stuffit version I'm using, 6.0.1, since others have gotten it to work. If anyone can help me, it would be appreciated.

INFORMATION re NETWORK/SOLO CARNAGE PACKAGE

To enter any level beyond the first (agorapfhorbia), hold down [apple-option] hile clicking on the "new game" key on the main menu. You will then be presented with a dialogue asking for the level number. This works on *any* marathon game/scenario/map, btw. Not just this specific package.

Note that there are four network/carnage levels merged in the solo map; "The dog wouldn't eat it", "Circle of D'eath", "Power Plug", and "We're Waiting For The Boxes".

These maps are not only for solo play, but also for network games, as pr the readme.

Excellent, excellent game. Great story, graphics, weapons, it's awesome. This really should be Marathon 4 if there ever was one! Magnificent job! Took me days to plow through it the first time, even on Easy, and a whole bunch of extra days to get through the Salinger line (ironically, I had to give up exploring the heck out of 'the gators of ny' and let the UESC Chimera blow up so I could rescue Carroway and get back on the Salinger line :P). And the last Salinger levels...well let's just say I needed a little save game helper to get me through those :) (I'd like to see someone Vidmaster Core Wars on TC, wooooo!). Oh btw those dream levels were excellent, and the 'comfortably numb' level was REALLY trippy.
My one concern is that I can't access any other solo carnage level other than Agoraphobia (is it because I have the AO version?). It was nice when I was able to blow up about 10 or so of those freakin' monsters...well, once, (that 1x health regenerating pack is a nice help), but there's 50 other levels to see!
But other than that, I couldn't ask for more! And for free too! =) Bravo to the Rubicon team!

I too am incredibly frustrated in trying to get into the White Room. I strongly suspect that it can be accessed from Blasted Vent Cores, most likely from the circular room on the top level that is visible but inaccessable. There is a corridor filled with troopers that connects this room to one of the main hallways, but there are doors on either end. Opening both doors seems to require a 5th repair chip, which I can't find anywhere. Is there a 5th chip hidden somewhere on this level or a previous level? Is there a hidden switch or pathway to the circular room? ANY suggestions would be appreciated.

Just to let you know, if your stuck somewhere dont give up and start a new game. So far all levels up to This Hurts Less Than, Uh... have been completed by me on TC (after about 7 days on the Ancension Factor). This proves that so far all levels are possible on any difficulty. The farthest back you should have to go is one level. Also, if anyone would like to know how to get to the bunch of weapons on Honk... I'm working on a vid film of it (the explosive thingys got me). If you need a hint before then check the Rubicon strategy guide Inio has. Also, it requires a bit of jumping and, yes, part of it is near corridor e7 (always seems to pop up doesnt it?). Folks, don't miss the 51 new solo carnage levels! Some of them are very, very tough. Others are just good, clean fun. Only two froze my G3. The breadth of the authors' vision is astonishing.

The Hulks chuck those bowling ball grenades! Argh! That totally screws-up my usual "blast-away-while keeping-a-safe-distance" attach plan. Those tracking grenades are particularly nasty...

Hats off to a great extension of the Marathon dynasty. If you haven't already done so, post some positive Rubicon comments over at Download.com to counterbalance the small handful of negative, ignorant comments left by clueless, diapered, wingnuts unfamiliar with what Rubicon or AO is.

Okay, anyone playing this on anything less than Major Damage has got to be chumping out.

The ONLY, yes, I said ONLY minor complaint I could possible have, is that this game has waaaaay too much ammo spread about.

Heh, if you can call that a complaint. :)

My opinion, best weap/ammo placement prize still goes to the M1 Trojan. Man, that game *never* let you max your ammo. Sweet.

SOME INFORMATION

1. Some of you have been been having problems playing network games. Unfortuntly, Aleph One does not support network games. If you want to play networked Rubicon games, you'll have to download the Infinity engine patcher (mix'n'match page at downloads).

2. We have no intention of making a Windows/Linux version of Rubicon. But if you ask those guys at Orbital Arm, maybe they'll help you. I also suspect some of you guys have gotten it to work on windows/Linux already.

3. Some of you have asked about the Rubicon Sounds file: There are no 16-bit sounds there; we removed them to reduce the download size. The only other oddity is that there are more sound addresses/slots/IDs than in the regular infinity sounds file. That could concievably cause trouble, but I doubt it.

C Lund <clund@notam.uio.no>
Oslo, Norway - Friday, March 30, 2001 at 05:32:08 (EST)
1. People might have some luck getting their Rubicon questions answered in the USENET newsgroup alt.games.marathon. Lots of very experienced players and mapmakers hang out there, some have finished Rubicon already, and some were beta testers.

2. Is there any intention of releasing an Aleph One/SDL version of Rubicon so Linux and Windows people can play this scenario? I've got a Mac and a PC (which runs both Linux and Windows), so I've been able to use ResEdit to get the MML out of the resource fork of the Rubicon AO application, which let me more or less run Rubicon on linux and windows. I'm having real problems getting the Sound file to work--sometimes I'm able to get sound by setting the preferences to 8-bit, but usually (this is still on Linux and Windows) I get no sound whatsoever. Is there anything unusual about the Rubicon Sounds file that might be causing this to happen?

3. Rubicon totally kicks ass.

I've been into this game for about a week now and all I can say is that this is a masterpiece. The details in every level are excellent. The atmosphere is perfect. The weapons are awesome. The new and old art work blend together very nicely. The complexity of the levels are actually a challenge because using the map doesn't always show you exactly where you think you are. My compliments to the chef(s), and thanks for keeping Marathon alive and better than ever...
PS - For any whiners out there that wrote in comments about how hard this game may be, I have not cheated on any level and have not asked for any help. A well made game requires thought and frustration after a defeat, but strengthens your will to try harder the next time (thanks to save terms).

Here's how I set up my keyboard controls:

Run = capslock (just leave it on)
Sidestep = 1 and 3 on the keypad
Weapon selection = 7 and 8
Map = `
Action = tab

Change whatever else you need to free up those keys. The Infinity cheater works; but there are still a few levels where you'll start out with zilch, and you can still run out of air on vac lavels.

I've figured something out - the Command key is the modifier to Run, NOT the Control key (which does some kinda lumbering thing). I was able to get up into the vent on "Five-Finger Discount" very easily and I think I'm almost finished this one (got all the chips in place, teleported somewhere, etc.) ...

I checked my Preferences. It says that the Control key is the modifier for Run and the Command key is the modifier for Sidestep. Like I said, this is contrary to my experience.

This game is so FIERCE!

WOW! Just finished one of the plot lines, can't wait to try the other.

As to the problem with getting into the vents on "Five Finger Discount", this is not really a spoiler, but avert your eyes if you want no help at all.

The access to the vents is in the room with the "Door of Death" as mentioned earlier (i.e., a very quick closing door that does damage). In this room are 4 boxes of various heights, 1 small box is on top of the biggest box in the room. With Run on, head up the smallest box towards the medium size box stopping at the top of the medium box. Turn around and run towards and up on the bog box, again stopping at the top. Turn around and face the 2 vents (one on top of the other), you are trying for the top vent. This is where you use the smallest box. Get as near the wall as possible and run towards the vent - the small box will lift you enough to make it into the vents.

Same as Donald, I'm stuck trying to get up into the vent in "Five Finger Discount". I've been emailing tsome people stuck on "HonK..." in corridor e7, so maybe someone can help donald and I.
Hopefully we can set up a forum for this Q & A.
I've started asking other posters about the vents in personal emails, and Ori_2 mailed me last night that you can pass right through the skin of the vent, but I still can't get up high enough. ...and that grenade launcher option sure smarts, but doesn't give enough lift either.
anyone?

Thanks for the tip for getting off the first level!

Now, I'm stuck at Five-Finger Discount. I've tried EVERYTHING to get up into that vent (you know, in the room with the Door of Death), but nothing! Here's a tip for getting on top of that big box, though:

Go to the smallest box and simultaneously go forward and left (for me, it's the 8 and 4 keys, respectively). DON'T press the Run key (Control). Hold them down, and eventually you'll float right on top of the big box.

Now, how do I get from the big box into that damned vent?!? I've just been blowing myself up with my grenade launcher ...

-- Important info on Aleph One and OpenGL!!! --

Since I've been using Aleph One for half a year now, I thought sharing some of my experience and knowledge might be a good thing.

Lots of people have written posts describing what could be called "the white squares of death", i.e. white squares starting to replace walls/enemies soon to be followed by a totall freeze.
What makes the squares appear is the fact that 3D-cards were never designed with sprite-based games such as Marathon in mind. All sprites used in a level are stored in the card vram. The white squares are signs of a full vram.

To prevent the vram from getting full:
1) Clear the vram by pressing F4 (I'd recomend agains this though since you'd have to keep an finger near F4 all the time).
2) Lower the size of the sprites using the Aleph One OpenGL settings. I have found that selecting; Walls: x1/2, Landscape: x1/8 (or select "Flat Landscapes"), Characters: x1/4, Weapons: x1/2, works fine on a 16mb ati rage pro 128. It won't look as good, but it will work, and that's what's important!

I completed the mission and got a congrats message before moving on, but I was surprised to find that I went to the Rozinante II and the Salinger Branch instead of the Rozinante III and Phor Branch. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? Doesn't matter how slowly, or how quickly I complete it (by following everything Durandal tells me) I get the congrats screen, but move in the branch as if I failed.

Dammit, I keep reading all these wonderful comments on Rubicon, and I can't even get out of the starting gate. I've downloaded the AO version from all 3 FTP servers and when I use Expander to unstuff the InstallRubicon.sit file, things go weird. Expander warns that the file may have problems, and when I DO run the installer, it gives me the following : "The application 'Install Rubicon' could not be opened because 'Install Rubicon' could not be found. I don't consider myself to be too stupid about this sort of stuff...maybe the resource fork is damaged. Any suggestions?

Wow. Absolutely awesome.

The quality of the maps, textures, weapons, monsters, everything, is superb, immense, and altogether amaizing.

Better then infinity, IMO!

First: WOW! Absolutely absorbing game - of course I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing!
So, I stumbled into this secret level (fairly early in the game - I won't spoil it other than to say it is called "Cow Pushing") and I am glad I saved before I went there because I am stuck. I can see where I need to get to, but I have been running around for awhile and haven't gotten there. I could maybe make it with grenade hopping, but that would probably kill me off. Any ideas?

Wow. I'm continually amazed at how well the levels in this game flow. I love the new and improved weapons. One problem is that in "We Dream You," I didn't have enough time to read the terms. I think they are really important, especially the one that talks about Kate. I think it would be cool if you included the term text in the spoiler guide, or on the website here.

re: unwinnable "blasted vent cores" and white room

ok, thought I was smart "stealing" a repair chip from "honk..." (blast yourself over the small box blocking the door). then I realized I could only have one repair chip while teleporting between "five finger..." and "...lutefisk". argh! Theres no later terms that teleport to anything between "Things... 1" and "blasted vent cores", doubt they're there but haven't checked for any auto-exit polys that point to those levels, and checked every possible access to the 5th chip switch, no way in without activating tags 1, 2 and 4, can't get to the secret room without tags 3 and 5, and theres no teleporters on the map. is it possible to get into that room without cheating?

Great work!! Quite an accomplishment! Definitely brings back the days of Marathon for me. Only problem is --- I can't beat the first level. I can get into corridor e7 and all that jazz and kill just about everything that moves on that level but then I am stuck. I can't find the communications center at all. Even the spoiler guide didn't help. Nice work, though.

Absolutely fantastic job, a level of professionalism not seen since the Bungie trilogy itself, and gorgeous in-game design matching the level of atmosphere and storyline. Even the damn website's great! I can even forgive the OpenGL problems... ; ) be great to see how that side develops. If only you could see the look on hardened old-timer Marathoneers round here when they first see this!...

Initially scared by the large file size, I eventually downloaded this amazing scenario.... this will re-ignite a lot of peoples interest in Marathon...... respect to all the Rubicon team!

(Are you gonna make it available on a CD? would be a good idea!)

oh, forgot to mention that Rubicon is jaw-droppingly ass-kickingly mind-bendingly PERFECT!. You are the alpha and the omega.

Just thought I should mention that :).

You can get "Blasted Vent Cores" into an unwinnable state by inserting chips in the first, second, and fourth slots, and then inserting the fourth chip in the wall socket near the super hunter. Nice secret term, but no exit and no white room :).

OK, problem.
I downloaded everything, and firstly, the Rubicon Updater tells me my Infinity program is not a valid file... reinstalling did nothing. Secondly, if I use the Rubicon AO program, the program tells me there is an alloc error when I try to start a new game.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Thanks for keeping Marathon alive. I've only just started the game, but Rubicon definitely has the look and feel of Bungie's Marathon series. Though I have Infinity I wanted to take advantage of AO's Open GL capability, and to be able to play at higher screen resolutions.

System: G4 450 AGP with Rage 128 Pro, 512 MB RAM, 20 G HD and OS 9.1. 100 MB RAM allocated to Rubicon.

The first time I played the game -- for about 45 minutes -- there seemed to be no bugs. I set display preferences for 1024 X 520 HUD, Thousands of Colors, Open GL and Full Screen enabled. The images looked great.

But today when I launched Rubicon and opened to the last saved position, a rectangular window appeared about one-third down from the top of the screen. Inside the window the game images were clear but the rest of the screen was flashing-strobing horizontal black and white rules. The HUD was garbled too.

Later I pulled the original Rubicon AO preferences out of the Preferences folder and restarted Rubicon. Still couldn't get full screen: now there was the clear rectangular window, but instead of the rest of the screen strobing and reversing, it was black. I've also turned off Open GL in video prefs and that gets rid of the flashing screen, but I can't get full screen any more. There's always that rectangular window with the HUD below it.

Thanks again.

So far, I am very impressed and pleased. I worked my way through all of the Marathons and never found any other game that could compare. Thanks for all of the hard work and your willingness to continue the saga!

One bit of help (question) - every time I get to a save spot, the game freezes and I have to restart (Mac). Any suggestions??

I've only gotten a few stages into this, but so far I'm just floored. When I played Return to Marathon, I was impressed. When I fired *this* up...words can not express the elation I feel. =]

I almost hope I don't beat your scenario too soon...I want to savor it.

Amazing. Stunning. Thanks, there goes the rest of what's jokingly referred to as my life.

On my B/W G3 with stock Rage 128 video, freezing problems went away when I installed the latest OpenGL (1.2.1). I extracted just the OpenGL drivers with TomeViewer, since the newest ATI drivers don't work for me, and apparently aren't necessary. I also increased Rubicon's allocation to 60MB. Every so often a white rectangle will appear, but so far jabbing F4 keeps crashes at bay.

Wow! Never has a maraton TC so captured my interest, or the feeling of the original series. I always thought evil was the best marathon game second only to the original games, now evil has taken a back seat, rubicon reigns supreme. level flow is excellent, physics balancing is superb, alien interaction is great, graphics are bar none, storyline convergence is awesome, you guys really pulled through on this one.

I think there might be a bug in Rubicon... or at least that's the way it looks. The second trigger of the fusion gun doesn't drain the batteries... no limit! Even if the battery is empty and first trigger won't fire, second trigger still works fine... =) Although sometimes is just stops and won't fire again for a while (overheated?).
Again, Rubicon is the BEST scenario for Marathon. I'm totally convinced.

I've got about a billion things to do, and what am I spending all of my time on? Playing Rubicon! This game kicks so much ass. I have run into a slight problem, though. I'm playing on a G4 450, and the first time I started up the AO version, it played fine on 1024 resolution with the HUD on. Every time since then, I have had to downsize the screen in order to see the HUD - if it is set to 1024 the menu bar of the desktop keeps showing up and pushing the HUD off of the screen! What's going on? The game is so much more immersive full-screen! Please let me know how to fix this. In all other respects, this is the Marathon game I've been waiting for since Infinity. You guys are gods.
